The Healthy Kids Programme Mauritius involves the development and use of nutrition education resources to introduce and consolidate selected topics/concepts in the Health and Physical Education (HPE) National Curriculum Framework (Primary 2016) and Pupils’ Workbook for pupils of Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5, their parents and the Holistic Education Educator. A play-based approach is used to integrate Movement/Physical Education concepts and skills in the activities that educators have to implement at school. Briefing and training sessions are conducted with key school personnel to ensure successful implementation of the programme.
Selected Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 Topics/Concepts for HKP
A number of nutrition education resources and activities have been developed for Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 pupils, parents and Educators in line with the objectives of HKP (Mauritius):
Activity Books for Pupils and Parents of Grades 2, 3 and 4
The Activity Books contain a set of activities to consolidate healthy eating concepts and to promote physical activity. The activities are meant to be completed at home by the pupils under the guidance of the parents. The Activity Books also include tips for parents to promote healthy eating and physical activity among children. Thus, the Activity Books have been developed to engage and involve parents in the nutrition education of their children.
Teacher’s Guides for Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5
The Teacher’s Guides include lesson plans which provide details on activities to facilitate the implementation of lessons on healthy eating concepts and Movement/Physical Education skills addressed in the Health and Physical Education curriculum for Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5. Holistic Education Educators are responsible for the implementation of the activities at school during the time allocated for Health and Physical Education in the school time table. Besides the Teacher’s Guides, the HKP (Mauritius) team members have developed other educational resources to support the implementation of the activities at school.
Grade 4 ‘Super-Chef Family’ Recipe Contest
In a bid to foster the participation of parents in HKP, besides the Activity Book, a culinary contest ‘Super-Chef Family Culinary Contest’ is organized involving Grade 4 pupils and their parents. The aim of the contest is to engage parents and children in a fun activity that would promote healthy eating and family bonding. The contest consists of different phases and run during the period of June to September. The best recipes are awarded prizes based on a set of criteria developed by a Jury Panel.
