Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD programme) with the University of Brighton
The Mauritius Institute of Education, in collaboration with the University of Brighton is presently offering a Doctorate in Education (EdD). This innovative EdD programme is intended for experienced, practising education professionals. It supports an individual’s development as a researching practitioner with a critical and interrogative approach to the understanding of their educational practice. Students on the programme represent a range of formal and informal educational settings in schools, youth work, further and higher education, and other organisations with a focus on education.
Aims of the Programme
The aim of the EdD is to deliver a programme of research based professional development to experienced professional practitioners who have educational responsibilities within their employment. To do this, the programme will develop conceptual knowledge and research capacity that will enable students to:
- Develop the capability of challenging, in an innovative, substantive and original manner, the adequacy of the existing body of knowledge.
- Develop the capacity to understand, use and critique a broad range of research techniques and approaches through which educational phenomena can be understood and improved, leading to research that makes an original contribution to knowledge, and which is of publishable standard.
- Develop the capability of defining, undertaking and evaluating research on professional practice and policy.
- Undertake critical reflection and lead the continuing development of new thinking and practices in their professional context to make an original contribution to professional knowledge.
- Contribute through coursework and a thesis, to knowledge and practice within their own profession.
Programme structure
Course duration: For the EdD the minimum period of study is 48 months, the normal period of registration is 84 months and the maximum period (including an extension which can be granted in exceptional circumstances) is 96 months beyond which there can be no further extensions.
- Stage 1 of the EdD
This Stage comprises of four assessed assignments which have been designed to introduce you progressively to a wide range of issues in the practice of education and to the full scope and content of research approaches currently utilised in your study.
Stage 1 usually takes two years to complete. Students are supported by a programme of small group seminars and assignments as well as individual tutorials to develop the skills and knowledge to conduct practitioner research and to prepare a Research Plan for their thesis. The assignments and modules in Stage 1, together with a viva voce examination at the end of this Stage, form a Master of Research in Education (MRes).
- Stage 2 of the EdD
This is the thesis stage and comprises a research plan and a 50,000-60,000 word thesis.
In stage 2 students embark on their thesis research work. As a student on the Professional Doctorate in Education, EdD, programme, you will undertake applied, practice-based research, combining theoretical analysis with fieldwork data collection to produce leading edge studies. In stage 2 of the EdD programme, when you are researching for your thesis, you will benefit from a supervisory team comprising two members of academic staff with expertise in your area of interest.
Support in completing the EdD
Within Stage 1, you will be allocated two advisors/supervisors with expertise and academic interest in your chosen area of study; one advisor/supervisor will be from the University of Brighton and one will be from MIE. Your advisors/supervisors will support you in completing your four assignments during Stages 1 and in completing your thesis in Stage 2 of the EdD. It is usual for advisors/supervisors to offer feedback to students on their work via email as well as through face-to-face (or Skype or other technology) sessions.
Depending on your research specialism you may also have an additional external supervisor from another school or another research institution.
Entry requirements
Degree and/or experience:
A qualification, normally at master’s level in a relevant subject or appropriate research experience. An application made by someone with research experience but with no master’s level qualification will be considered on its merits and will normally require independent academic references. Applicants will normally have at least four years of appropriate professional experiences.
Applicants whose grades fall below these requirements, but who can demonstrate a high commitment to the subject discipline or have relevant work experience, are still encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.
Fees
£3,090 per year
Payment may be made in up to 6 installments per year by arrangement with the Income Section, UOB.
