Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDIp Ed, MIE/UOB)

In its endeavor to constantly provide quality professional development opportunities for in service teachers and democratize access to internationally benchmarked programmes, the MIE in partnership with the University of Brighton (UoB) innovates with the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDip Ed).

The PGDIP (Ed) is a bridging course consisting of four modules which are equivalent to the first year modules of the MA Education designed to equip teachers who have earned either a Post Graduate Certificate in Education prior to 2014, or a Bachelor in Education (Honours) or a Bachelor in Arts (Honours) with Education with the knowledge and skills required to work at Masters level.

The PGDIP (Ed) is accredited by the UoB and is recognized as part of the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) policy of the University implying that holders of the PGDIP will be eligible for the 80 CATS point on the Masters in Education programme delivered jointly by MIE and UoB making it more accessible to teachers.

The Aims of the Programme

The approach to professional development of teachers is one geared primarily to develop a capacity to steer one’s own learning and development. The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) experience thus seeks to utilize faculty expertise to meet the professional needs of teachers. The aims of the PGDIP Programme are to:

  1. Encourage development of knowledge in some critical aspects of their professional practice
  2. Support trainee teachers autonomy as learners
  3. Develop their capacity for self-assessment of their own practice

There are four modules on the programme. They draw essentially from the existing Masters in Education Programme currently offered or from the PGCE programme offered since 2015 for which APL is granted on the MA Programme.

They are as follows:

Delivery Mode

The programme will be delivered using a blended approach of face to face sessions and asynchronous online contact on the MIE moodle platform. For each module, 8- 10 hours of direct face to face contact time has been planned spread in blocks of 2 hours teaching sessions. The moodle platform will host the learning resources which students will use to achieve the learning outcomes as well as discussion forums. All assessments both formative and summative will be completed via the platform through forums and uploads.

Teaching and Learning

A variety of approaches including formal lectures, collaborative strategies, group work will be used for the face to face sessions. The face to face sessions will be supplemented by online support mediated through the MIE ecampus moodle platform.  The platform will contain reading materials and other learning resources. To encourage continued engagement with peers and tutors discussion forums and blogs will be set up.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Education Team

This team comprises of a core of tutors who have been teaching similar modules on the MA Education (UoB). They will be supported by a team of external examiners from the UoB who also work on the Masters programme in Mauritius.
